Au Brothers Jazz Band

Redwood Coast Music Festival 2019 Performing Artists

For 2019 The Au Brothers Jazz Band will be returning to perform at the Redwood Coast Music Festival.  The brothers are favorites of our audiences here and they have been playing the traditional jazz of New Orleans ever since their uncle, High Sierra trombonist Howard Miyata, turned them on to the music at an early age.

Gordon Au (trumpet/vocals), called “comfortable in any idiom and fearless” by music writer Michael Steinman, draws upon a palette ranging from the traditional jazz of Louis Armstrong to the modern jazz of today. In New York, Gordon leads the Grand St. Stompers, a traditional jazz band called “a pillar of New York’s hot jazz scene” by The New York Times, and appears with the Grammy-winning Vince Giordano & the Nighthawks, the Louis Armstrong Eternity Band at Birdland, Dandy Wellington, and others. He is in demand around the country as a soloist (International Trumpet Guild), festival guest artist (Redwood Coast Music Festival, Monterey Jazz Bash By the Way), swing musician (Lindy Focus, DC Lindy Exchange), arranger (Terence Blanchard, Lizzy & the Triggermen), and clinician and educator (Jazz at Lincoln Center). Gordon is a graduate of the renowned Monk Institute and Berklee College of Music.

Brandon Au (trombone/english baritone/tuba) teaches trombone and performs traditional jazz regularly in the Sacramento area. Currently involved in the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society’s TJP (Traditional Jazz Project), he works with several schools and their traditional jazz programs. Before graduating with amusic performance degree at CSU Hayward,Brandon toured Europe with the CSU Hayward jazz ensemble, and again with the Stanford Jazz Orchestra. He went on to become a member of Dave Eshelman’s Jazz Garden Big Band, The New Lowdown Jazz Band and lead the Section 7 Jazz Band. Today he can be heard regularly with Polly’s Hot Paupers, Harley White Jr. Jazz Orchestra, Anthony Coleman II’s Simplistic Big Band, Element Brass Band, Nostalgic Swing,The Brandon Au Quartet, The Crescent Katz and the Ron Cunha Big Band. He has also subbed with Steelin’ Dan, Fulton Street Jazz Band and Cell Block 7. His own group The Crescent Katz, can be heard every first Saturday at Clark’s Corner (originally Shakey’s Pizza).

Justin Au, an alumnus of the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society’s youth education programs, has been playing traditional jazz ever since his Uncle, Howard Miyata, turned him on to the music at an early age. In high school he garnered Best Trumpet awards at various music festivals, and was awarded an Honorable Mention at the prestigious Essentially Ellington big-band competition at Lincoln Center, NY.
