The Memphis Kings are a blues and roots band based in southern california. Originally formed over fifteen years ago with the intent to be a support band for touring musicians. The band’s sound has been influenced by the musicians they have supported. Over the years they have worked with California legends Lynwood Slim, James Harman, Big Jay Mc Neely, Big Sandy and Kid Ramos. They have also worked as the international musicians Nico Duportal, Si Cranstoun, and Paul Pigat to name a few. The Memphis Kings are a blues and roots band based in southern california. The band consists of guitarist Tommy Harkenrider, drummer Ron Felton and bassist Joe Jazdzewski. At Redwood Coast this year they are joined by Ron Dziubla on Tenor Sax and Jim Jedeikin on Bari Sax
Tommy Harkenrider is a Blues and Roots guitarist and educator from Los Angeles California. He has been a performer and educator for over 25 years. Living in Southern California, and being passionate about Blues, provided a unique opportunity to be mentored by some Legendary West Coast musicians. Those legends becoming friends offered opportunities for Tommy to work regularly with them. Some of those friends include Kid Ramos, Lynwood Slim, James Harman, Candye Kane and Big Jay McNeely. Tommy’s voice on the guitar is reminiscent of vintage music derived and developed in California spanning the 1940’s and 50’s. Everything from Jump Blues to Western swing is apparent in his playing. No matter what the band those elements are always tastefully distinguishable.
As am educator, Tommy has a global community of students. Some students include notable musicians looking to expand their skills in Traditional Blues. His unique methodology of teaching embraces history, culture, and region, which inspires specific Blues and Roots sub-genres. His love of learning inspired his passion to teach. He travels nationally and internationally conducting masterclasses and clinics.
Tommy has recorded and written music for various bands and companies around he world. He has written and recorded music for Apple Computers that is featured in Apple products.
